Outdoor for Life

By: Yannah Rabot

Have you ever been on a hiking trip? How about a walk in the forest, rock climbing, camping, or any other outdoor activity? Before coming to HIS, I’ve never done most of these. If I were you, I would grab the opportunity to do these stuff. You won’t regret it! You’re gonna make a lot of memories, isn’t that great? It’s the beginning of the school year but I’ve done a lot of activities already.

Here’s a picture of use doing a short hike for Outdoor Pursuits. I was behind because it was my first time “hiking”. It was really fun, I got to socialize with the other people behind me as well. I got to enjoy the scenery, such as the tall trees, the different types of plants, small ponds, and small streams. I’m not really an active person because I never got the opportunity to do these things. To be honest, I really love going outdoor, I love to look at the sky, the green scenery, everything. Did you know that hiking boosts your mood? Gregory A. Miller, PhD, President of the American Hiking Society, says “Research shows that hiking has a positive impact on combating the symptoms of stress and anxiety”. Isn’t that cool? Whenever you feel emotionally and physically drained, a walk in the park could help release the negative emotions in you. Another benefit of hiking is that it helps you control, or even prevent, diabetes by lowering your sugar levels (when you do it regularly).

“In my old school, we don’t have any kind of outdoor activities. At the beginning I felt like I was forced to go but I realized that it’s actually fun. I was in 8th grade when I went hiking for the first time. I was crying because I was scared, and I was afraid that I might fall from the mountain. Even if I didn’t go to the top, I still had fun.” - Kakanang (Fahr) Sivakriskul

Besides hiking, you could do camping, kayaking, climbing and more. Everyone gets scared when they try things for the first time, sometimes we regret it but most of the time we feel satisfaction because you’ve done something you’d never see yourself doing. Try new things and have fun!
