Milepost 3: Personal Narratives

My Memory Book

by  Yuna Hamada

¨wait for us!¨my sister called out to me. I saw my little sister, little brother, and grandma up the top of the escalator.

¨sorry, I can't wait! You know how I like books!!¨ I shouted to my little sister, Mika  and started to rush down the escalator. I was in my favorite place Seiyu with my grandma, sister, and  brother.

When we got to the bookstore, I ran between the bookshelves to the corner of the bookstore, where my most favorite series books were. I couldn't wait to choose my new book!!

¨wait.¨I said in a small voice that others can't hear. I have all the books in that book store. I want to have a new book that I don't have in my house! I went to the counter, with my grandma. I was a little bit sad. And i asked the staff, ¨does this bookstore have

´Neko Neko nihonshi yojijukugo`?¨

Then staff answered ¨we don't have that in this bookstore, but you can order it.¨ I looked at grandma's face. I asked ¨can i?¨ Grandma smiled, and said ok, she wrote her name, telephone number, and her address. Now the book that I wanted for long will be mine! hooray!!

After one week. I waited every day for the book. Our family goes to  my grandma's house every day, so I asked my grandma every day if the book arrived. I asked her for the book almost for 1 week. Every day, her answer was ¨No, not yet.¨

One day, after I waited for about a week, i dashed to my grandma's house. I got there in 10 seconds. I opened the doors very fast. bang!!¨I'm back!¨I said to My aunt. She answered ¨welcome back. Wash your hands. And your new book is here.¨

When I heard that from my aunt, my movement got faster. I run in and took my shoes off. I washed my hands, ripped tape, and I grabbed the book, opened a plastic bag. I took my new book out. Finally the brand new, bright white, very cute, super great my book got to my grandma's house. Finally!! I started to read my brand new book. Awesome!! That book was about four character idiomatic compounds(四字熟語). Yojijukugo is idioms that are made up of 4 kanjis. In the book, cute cats are drawn in all pages. Even on front cover too! I read that book over and over. That was how the book was interesting.

At night,my grandma came back from practicing with the  orchestra. I rushed to grandma. I said in a loud voice, ¨thank you!!¨ To grandma, with  my feeling, thrilled showing with my body. She said¨your welcome.¨ And we had a v-e-r-y lively dinner with my aunt, 3 cousins, my sister, brother, my parents, and my grandma .

Not long after I got my wonderful book, my grandma died in a traffic accident. the ´Neko  Neko-Nihonshi yojijukugo` is now my grandma and my most important memory book forever. The bookstore and Seiyu is a special place in my memory with my grandma. I will always remember my grandma especially in Seiyu´s escalator, and book store.

My Present To My Sister

by  Sidney So

Tick. Tick.  In a dark dark room, one little light was twinkling in front of me. It was very shiny yellow and red.

I suddenly put a light on a candle. Then, the light get one to two, two to three, three to four. I turned on the light. Now there was 23 candles that were lit front of me.

“Fabulous cake!” I thought proudly. In the room, there was a strawberry tart, crackers, lighter, roasted turkeys and a pinata. I checked my plan list for my sister’s birthday. “I think I’m finish.” I mumbled.

“NO, I FORGOT TO BUY A PRESENT!!!!!!!”

“It is the main event in the birthday but, but, but…

I FORGOT IT!!!!!!!!” I thought hard what should I do next.

I felt that I’m in the end of the world! Well, this is easy. I just need to buy a perfect, wonderful, marvelous, fantastic, present.

I dashed out of my house and got my blue speedy scooter and rode to the bus station!

I couldn't see anything because I was going so speedy and the ground was flashing as a lightning.

I walked up the humongous hill and sled down the

slippery hill. I walked exhausted to the station.

Sweat dripped from my forehead. My face was red as a apple. My world, that I could see, was going around. I heard the kindergarteners chatting while passing me. I smelled the stinkiest of a burning smoke. I could see a bus stopping in front of me. Maybe I need to go back to my home. But if I didn't buy a present that she likes, I think she would be a monster and be  silent. That means she would not listen to me anymore and talk to me anymore, and I'll cry all night with my tissue on my hand.

I climbed up the stairs and paid the fee and the bus driver smiled and rejoiced, ¨Thank you very much! (arigatou gozaimasu)¨ I sat on a hard small seat, then the door closed. Now the bus started moving and I could see that trees, cars and people were flashing past me. Everything that I could see was like a fast motion video. I heard two babies crying so loudly at the seat next to me. I was out of my energy to hear baby screaming so I got my backpack and put my right hand inside and I took out some strawberry flavoured candies and give it to the babies.

Then suddenly the babies stopped crying and gave me a big smile. I thought that it was sweet. Now I realized that they cried because they wanted a candies...Maybe?

I heard the automatic door opened and the air swooshed out from the door and I got out from the bus and strolled to the shopping mall. I went through the automatic door and went straight to the elevator and the door was opened so I dashed in and pressed the 3rd floor botton. No one was in the elevator except for me.The door opened and I walked fast to a bookshop.

But the problem happened, it's not such a problem but it was a problem for me.

IT WAS SO NOISY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There was a place we can play computer games and kids and adults were not going to a work but playing there!

I escaped from there and runaway to a bookshop.¨HA,HA,HA,HA, I used all my power getting there so I couldn't run anymore. I feel I will be deaf if I were there everyday.¨Maybe I need to find another way to go to the bookshop more safely.¨ I struggled.

It was so quiet and I smelled a little bit of wood and few kids were reading comic books. They will be out from this bookshop because they’re reading the books without buying. They just run away when the owner came.

There were so many books. The book store was very new! It opened about 2 weeks before. I couldn't believe it! There were more than 30,000 books! It was a perfect maze. Well it was not good for me. Because I needed to go back to my home as soon as I could.I decided to get a fiction book.

But, there was another problem!! There's so many books and I couldn't choose one!!! OMG!!! There is so many problems in this shopping mall!! I couldn't decide on what book to get so I went to Starbucks to buy a cappuccino and rest and think for a second.

I sat on a bench in front of an electric shop and just sat thinking and relaxing. There was a television front of me so I just watched some commercial and just thought.

Then the commercial changed and a picture of a big book flashed up on the screen. It was a picture of a book called, ¨The Bear`s Cake Shop.¨ This would be very fantastic, wonderful, marvelous present for Anna!!!

I rushed back to the book shop, and I asked the people who was working there, ¨WHERE IS A BOOK CALLED BEAR`S CAKE SHOP?¨ The man got a surprise and he jogged to the shelf and I followed him. There was the book!!!!! I speedly took the book and bought it.

I came to the first floor, and through the automatic doors and dashed to the bus station and the bus was about to arrive to the next station so I jumped into a bus and put in a jar then sat on a seat. I was like wild now and was anxiously waiting for traffic lights to turn to green.

Then I got out of a bus and I took my scooter and I scooted back to my home.

I strolled to the genkan, I felt dizzy and my eyes couldn't focus. I couldn't stand up. When my mom came and stood in front of me, I thought she is a monster and I shouted,

¨A MONSTER!!!¨

After that my mom hit me hardly on my head. I couldn't think now. Goodness me.

“Creeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaakkk~~~~~”

The door slowly opened with  cold air whooshing in. Then a person who was wearing sunglasses, and wearing an expensive looking coat and heel shoes came into our house and put down her sanglassess… It was my sister!!!

When she tried to say something, I was falling down and staring back at her like I saw a new type of animal that gives me 100,000,000,000,000,000,000 yen if I did something good. She greeted my dad and mom and to me. I feel so completely happy.

I held her hand and invited to her birthday party. She ate, she drank, and sang songs. She was acting like a 6 year old kid who wants to have a birthday party everyday. Not like a 23 year old woman.

“Okay, Okay. I need to give her a birthday present now!” I whispered at the back of her. But when I tried to give her the present, my hands froze like I’m in Antarctica.I started  giggling so my sister asked, “Why are you giggling?” I was so surprised that I threw the present in the air! My sister caught it! This was a strange way to give her a present. I didn’t say anything, as my sister opened the present. We both didn’t talk for a while. Finally, she just whispered, “Thank you very much Sidney!” Then our faces filled with a big smile.

“Happy Birthday!”, we all shouted.

I was so happy! I could have even run around outside of the house doing 200 laps! I was very happy that my sister loved the present. This adventure started when I forgot the present and I went to shopping and there was a lot of a problems. But now that I have given her a present, I felt very happy and my sister is happy too. ¨What should I give her next year?” I wondered.

Ice Skating Present

by  Arina Ibragimova

I had only been back at HIS a week when my teacher said that on Wednesday, November 14th elementary classes will go ice skating. I was surprised because Wednesday, November 14th  is my father's and my birthday. I was happy. It was almost like a present for me.

When I got home I told my dad that on our birthday elementary school will go skating .
My dad was impressed and happy.

Then, on the next Wednesday, I got my hokey stuff - protection, skates, gloves and helmet and rushed to the bus stop. All the way on the bus I thought about how I will skate. I was so nervous that my stomach felt that there was was a bunch of butterflies fluttering inside.

Not long after I got to school, my class was getting ready for ice skating. Soon, we rode the bus to Tsukisamu Arena (月寒 アリ一ナ).

When we got there, everybody buckled their skates and got on the ice. I saw my dad was skating too so went to skate with my dad, until someone was shooting at Ms.Sugino snowballs . Ms Sugino told me that I can make snowballs and shoot at Kai. I did it and its was so much fun. So I did it again and again until when I was resting on the bench .

When I was resting I saw that Hugo, Ryosei, Andrew and Kota was playing together. I rushed to them and stopped quickly and grated ices from my skates was like snow and it flew onto Hugo’s ski pants. He was surprised. Then he asked me to do it one more time. Next, I did it again but not on Hugo. I did it on Kota then on Andrew then on Ryosei. When I did on Ryosei he shouted like a girl. Everybody shouted  and asked that I do it on Ryosei so I  did it again and again.

After that, Kota tried to do the same on me but he could not do it. I showed him how to do it. I said to him that he can only skate slowly so that is why he can't stop like me. But if he will skate  faster, then he can make it correctly. Kota tried and he did it!

On this day, I felt happiness. I was so happy and proud that I could teach about ice skating things. Next time when I will teach my friends I will try my best .

My First Day of School

by Sam Davenport

“Sam! Wake up- it’s the first day of school!”, my dad cheered.

“Wha-” I mumbled.

My dad repeatedly said like a parrot,”Sam, it’s the first day of school! The first day of school!”

I, still half asleep said,”Okay, I'll wake up in five minutes.”

“You can't! It's the first day of school!”

I was getting tired of this, so I got up, and limped downstairs. I was still really tired so I drank a cup of hot tea that my dad had prepared for me. I was very nervous because I had never been to an English speaking school before. I thought that my English would be insufficient and people would make fun of how bad I spoke English. I just did not want to go at all.

So, I decided to get my iPhone and hide in the closet. It was a big closet which had lots of clothes in it, and it was very dark, too. I turned on my iPhone, and typed in my password, pressed my games folder and tapped the Minecraft logo and played a survival world.

After half an hour or so, I looked at the time. 8:46. Oh no! We were going to be late! I slammed the door open, and ran down the stairs. I ran to get my jacket, and dashed to the entrance. Wait. School was supposed to start at 10:45. Well that was a false alarm.

Hopefully no one heard me or saw me.

I went back to hiding in the closet. I used my iPhone as a torch and started doodling on a piece of paper. After a few minutes of Doodling, I heard a weird sound. I wondered what it could be. I went downstairs to see what it was. Nothing there. I thought about what would make that gurgling sound.

I went outside to see if the sound was coming from somewhere out there but all I heard was my dad's lawn mower buzzing and growling. I went back inside and hided behind the curtain and waited for him to stop mowing the grass.

After what seemed like a few minutes, I stopped being able hear my dad's lawn mower. So I went back outside to see if I could hear anything and I could. I heard something that sounded like weird gurgling sound. It sounded like it came from the trees so I climbed the one which had the most sound coming from it. I almost slipped because  some bark was breaking and falling off the tree on my way up, but I managed to climb all the way up the birch tree.

I couldn't see anything because there were lots of leaves covering my face, so I swiped the leaves out of my face and I couldn't believe my eyes! Right in front of me was a bird's nest with eggs in it! I thought I was  dreaming but clearly I wasn't. Wait. The adult birds (parents) were about to attack me. Oh no! I felt a painful stab on my hand as the parent bird pecked as strong as a bullet and I couldn’t stand the pain so I started to tumble. I hit my body on the tree. I was falling. Then, I touched the ground with a terrible THUD!!! To make a long short, I got ´K.O.´ed by a pair of birds! I felt really dumb. Ouch! My hand was bleeding. And it was bleeding fast.

I rushed back inside. I saw my red hand and tried to open the door. It's stuck. Oh no! My hand is hurting as much as I can even imagine. I pulled the door for all I was worth. The door flung open and I fell to the ground.

I quickly stood up and dashed inside to the sink beside the washing machine. I turned on the tap and put a whole lot of sticky, gritty aesop soap on my hands, and I rinsed down the soap with the tap water that was flowing down the sink. Then, I searched all over the cupboard for a plaster, and I couldn't find one. Hmmm….  Where to search? I didn’t want to ask my dad because I wanted to feel cool to do it by myself.

I went into the kitchen to find the plasters.   I pulled a drawer out.

It was full of knives, forks and spoons. I pulled out another drawer, and and another and another. I was about to give up when I saw that there were a few plasters in the last drawer that I pulled out. Yay! I take a plaster out of the pack, and put it onto my poor hand.

Just then I hear someone calling out, ¨Sa-am! Sa-am!¨ It's my dad! I run down stairs, go outside and dash to dad.

My dad chuckled, “I've been looking all over for you!”

I replied, “I´m so sorry,¨ and told my dad everything that happened. He exclaimed, “I don't think I could have done that when I was a kid!”

A big smile spread across my face. I hugged my dad. He told me to get in the car so I hopped into the car, hoping to have a good day at school. After all, it couldn't be as adventurous as the morning I had. Could it?

My Taiwan Friend

by Ien Tsai

I have a good friend in Taiwan. His nickname is Jockie. When I was in Taiwan we drank  soup together after school. We played catch together at recess. We walked to school together most of the days. When I was in Taiwan I did many things with Jockie but then I came to Japan because my mom had to work here.

I was kind of looking forward to going to Japan because I wanted to play in the snow and make new friends. But I felt kind of strange being new and kind of sad without Jockie.

But now I talk to him on the iPad for about 20 mins most days. We have tried to keep in touch.  He sent me a letter a few months ago and it said:

¨Hello Ian,

I went on a trip and I found some sea shells. And I bought some candies for you too!¨

Jockie sent me a package with 3 special shells and the candies. I finished eating them in one week. I was happy. So I sent him a birthday present. I gave him toy gun because I thought he would like that.

I thought that maybe I would lose our friendship but we talk nearly every day. And we think about one another. And when I have a big break I go back to Taiwan to see Jockie. We will be meeting in Winter at my Taiwan house. I am happy and excited because we will meet and eat pizza and play a war game together.

I feel OK being away from Jockie now because I know that it won’t be for a long time. And we can keep in touch.

Flying Through the Mountains

by Nia Erickson

It was summertime and I was at LAS, a summer camp in Switzerland. On the first day all the students  all gathered together in a big gym. There, our teachers talked about themselves and what we were going to do there.

After a while a man walked up and gave everybody a list that had our schedule on it. I glanced at my list and in nice black letters it said parapenting!  I was so happy, nervous, excited, and scared I all at the same time I had a jumble of feelings inside. I felt like a big hot Kettle about to let off steam!

I waited and waited and waited for hours until finally, it was time to go parapenting. I was so excited. I skipped down the little path from the Eden dorm( that had only girls in it). l skipped  all the way to the Big quadrangle.

When I got to the quadrangle, I saw a staff  member holding up a big colorful sign that said ‘Parapenting’. So I dashed over to him . When I got to the big colorful sign the staff member who was there asked me, “Excuse me what's your name?”
“Nia”, I answered cheerfully as he picked up his pen and wrote my name on his black check board.

I went over to sit down and waited for everyone in the group to get there. A minute later, a big  gray van pulled up next to the quadrangle and we all hopped into the van cheerfully . We drove all the way to the bottom of a  big mountain. Then we got in a  big building where the lifts for the mountains were .  We all got into a lift and we started to get higher and higher. When we were all  seated in the lift we all started to talk about how nervous we were and how high we were . Finally, we all got out of the lift to smell the light breeze of the mountain.

On the mountain, I spotted a big hut covered with shining mirror like things. Later we met some people who would help us parapenting.
“Follow me”, said a man said wearing a big black bag. So we all  walked behind him down a little path that led a little bit down the mountain.  Then we all went to one of the men who was going to help us parapent. I sprinted to one of the men and he helped me get the harness on. After he harnessed me, he harnessed himself. When we were finished he grabbed this weird seat like things that he put on himself and sat on it. Then he told me to sit on him, so I sat down and he buckled me in.

I could feel my heart racing like a big cannon about to explode. The man looked at me and asked ,¨Ready?¨
¨ Ready!¨, I answer and we started to run down the mountain and suddenly, Wosssssshhhhh! Our wing caught the wind.  We started to glide in the air as a light breeze hit my face. I felt like a free bird soaring through the sky.
¨This is the best day ever !!!!¨ I exclaimed.

In my excitement, I reached over to my pocket to grab my bright orange camera . I held it and I tried to get the strap on my hand.In my mind I thought over and over, “Don't drop it. Don't drop it. Don't drop it. Don't drop it.”  then I was relieved as I got the strap on my hand. Without dropping it I grabbed the camera and click click click I took many pictures of my feet and the sky.

A few minutes later, I don't know from where, but the man pulled a string thing and before I knew it we were hanging down the sides. Then we were thrown on our backs and I saw the blue sky. Then we turned to face the ground and I saw the light green hillside and green pine tree forest. It got faster. Then we were pushed back to our first position. We did it again and again and again as he pulled the string.

I was very pleased that I was in the sky that I didn't notice that we had started going lower and lower toward the ground. I turned to look at the blue shining sky and saw the others soaring through the sky. As I yelled through the wind higher higher but we kept going lower and lower. Finally I gave in and we landed on the site of light green shimmer and grass.

As we unbuckled ourselves from the black seat, I  stood up and thought to myself how much nicer it was to soar through the glittering blue sky than walking or playing on green grass. “Aaaaaahhhhhh.”,  I sighed.

I can't  wait to do it again next year!!!!!!!!!!!
